Work starts on 25 affordable apartments in Cowplain

Construction has started on a much needed housing development of 25 new affordable rented two-bedroom apartments in Milton Road, Cowplain.

Stonewater, a leading UK housing provider, is working with Havant Borough Council and Foreman Homes Group to deliver the energy-efficient homes on the regenerated site of an old disused petrol station.

The balconied apartments will each have an allocated parking space and a bicycle storage area. All the properties will also achieve a Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 efficiency rating with gas central heating systems and energy-saving features such as high levels of thermal insulation to help minimise residents’ fuel bills and carbon footprint.

“We’re very pleased to be working with Havant Borough Council and Foreman Homes Group to deliver this much needed affordable housing development in Cowplain,” said Jonathan Layzell, Stonewater Assistant Director for Development. “It has previously been very difficult for people on modest incomes to afford to live in the area due to the high cost of renting and we hope that these new apartments in Milton Road will help address this problem.”

Stonewater successfully bid for funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to finance the new development, which is due to be completed in March 2016.

Julie Watson-Cowen, Havant Borough Council’s Housing Enabling Officer said: “The provision of these 25 homes will certainly help to meet the ever growing demand for affordable housing in the Havant Borough; we have in excess of 2,700 households currently registered on Hampshire Homechoice, and a high proportion of these seeking two bedroom properties of the type being delivered here.”

Stonewater currently owns and manages 2,259 homes across Hampshire. The development of affordable housing in this area is an important part of Stonewater’s further growth plans over the coming years.

Spencer Drake, Foreman Homes Sales Manager commented: “We are delighted to be working in conjunction with Stonewater to provide these 25 superb affordable homes for rent. We are sure that delivering this new development in spring 2016, will be the start of an excellent relationship between ourselves, Stonewater and Havant Borough Council”.
