Shottery residents to benefit as work starts on 11 affordable village homes
Local villagers in Shottery, near Stratford-on-Avon, had 11 good reasons to celebrate this month as construction got under way on a new development of Stonewater affordable homes in Church Lane.
Stonewater, the leading affordable housing provider, is working with Stratford-on-Avon District Council and Spitfire Properties to deliver the £1.5 million development which will provide a mix of 11 individually designed and energy-efficient homes with details to reflect the character of the local area. The Stonewater properties include two three-bedroom family houses, six two-bedroom houses and a one-bedroom house for affordable rent, and a two-bedroom and three-bedroom house for shared ownership sale. This is the second housing development to start this summer which Stonewater is delivering in partnership with the Council. Last month construction began on six new affordable homes for rent and shared ownership sale in Welford-on-Avon.
The new Stonewater scheme is part of Spitfire Properties’ The Cedars development of 32 homes in the former grounds of Shottery Hall on the edge of the village.
“It’s great to see construction starting on these urgently-needed affordable homes which will provide local residents, who cannot afford the high cost of housing in the village, with good quality, affordable accommodation,” said Matt Crucefix, Stonewater Regional Development Manager. “We’re very pleased to be working with Stratford-on-Avon District Council and Spitfire Properties to deliver these new houses and we look forward to continuing this successful partnership and building more affordable homes where they are most needed in the district.”
The new Stonewater homes, each with a private garden and designated parking, are within easy walking distance to shops, schools and other services and amenities in the village. They will also benefit from being close to a new public footpath and cycle link to Alcester Road. The homes will be delivered to a high standard of energy efficiency and will help residents to save money on energy bills.
Cllr Chris Saint, Leader of Stratford-on-Avon District Council said: “The District Council welcomes the delivery of this scheme, which forms part of its overall affordable housing development programme. It will provide an opportunity for households who would otherwise be priced-out of the local housing market to live in good quality homes in an attractive location, contributing to the long-term sustainability of the local community and economy.”
