First phase of much-needed affordable homes gets under way in Stanford

Construction is set to progress quickly on a much-needed new development of 28 affordable village homes in Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire.

Stonewater, one of the UK’s leading social housing providers, is developing the £4 million scheme in Faringdon Road in partnership with Vale of the White Horse District Council, Stanford in the Vale Parish Council and contractors David Wilson Homes.

The properties which are being built to meet the needs of young people, couples and families struggling to find affordable housing in the village, will offer a mix of 21 homes for affordable rent and seven homes for shared ownership. They will include four one-bedroom apartments, one-two bedroom apartment, 10 two-bedroom houses, four three-bedroom houses and two large four-bedroom family homes for rent. The seven shared ownership houses under construction provide a mix of five two-bedroom and two three-bedroom homes.

“There is an urgent need for good quality, affordable housing in Stanford in the Vale where local people – particularly younger ones – cannot afford a home of their own in the area,” said Matt Crucefix, Stonewater Development Manager. “Stonewater is committed to building homes in rural settlements like Stanford. These schemes help preserve the economic viability of rural communities by enabling local people on modest incomes to live and work close to their family, friends and support network.”

The sensitively designed properties will reflect the architectural character of the village with simple traditional natural stone facades, stone slate roofing, casement windows, pitched roofs, exposed rafter feet and simple roof verges.

All the properties will also achieve a Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 efficiency rating with low-energy heating systems to keep residents’ fuel bills down.

Rob Bennett, Contracts Manager from David Wilson Homes commented: “We are very pleased to be working with Stonewater on this new development. We are proud of the high quality energy-efficient homes we are building which will fit in well with the surroundings and provide vital affordable housing for local people who want to live in the area.”

The first phase of the scheme is due for completion in March.

The Faringdon Road development is one of several affordable housing schemes Stonewater is delivering in Oxfordshire. The housing provider also has a new £2.8 million scheme of 24 affordable homes under construction at Longford Park in Banbury.
