Fiesta brings local community together
Social housing provider Stonewater supported a community event that took over Floyds Fields recreation ground in Tile Hill Village, Coventry.
Jointly organised by Stonewater, Orbit Group Ltd, Tile Hill Village Residents Association (THVRA) and other local organisations, the Floyds Fields family fiesta welcomed families and members of the community to a fun afternoon featuring food, activities and entertainment.
The fiesta was part of the city’s string of community festivals for this year aiming to promote and celebrate the benefits of sport and physical activity, in honour of its European City of Sport 2019 title.
There was no entry fee to the event and free hot food was kindly provided by Langar Aid charity. In addition to providing lots of sporting activities, there were live performances by Scribble Victory, Dragonhead and the Coventry Mummers, as well as a fun family dog show.
The fiesta also raised just under £600 from a number of activities held at the event including a tombola and raffle. The money will be used to buy a defibrillator for the village, donated to two local charities – including Zoe’s Place and First Responders –with the remaining funds being used to organise the event next summer.
Guy Stenson, Director of Housing Operations (Customer Experience) at Stonewater, said: “We work very hard to build and invest in the communities we provide homes for and so, we were delighted to support this year’s fiesta and help raise money for a baby’s hospice and to support community first responders. Coventry is an important area for our organisation.
“Not only because we opened a brand-new office here last year, but we recognise that there is a critical shortage of good quality low-cost accommodation across the city. We currently manage 1,200 affordable homes in Coventry, and we look forward to working on projects that allow us to house more people, in the area, in the future.”
Councillor Kamran Caan, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Sport, said: “It was great to have so many people enjoying sport at Floyds Fields family fiesta. Coventry’s Community Festivals are all about bringing communities together, getting them active and showing everyone that they can have fun at the same time.
“Events like this are encouraging for people’s futures. It’s really important people know there are sports and wellness activities out there for all ages and abilities that can be enjoyed in our city for free. It’s yet another sport event that falls perfectly during our year as European City of Sport 2019. I'm looking forward to seeing even more Community Festivals in Coventry soon.”
Karen Sprouse from Tile Hill Village Residents Association said: “THVRA was delighted with the success of its stalls in raising monies for charity, the association and for a Defibrillator for the Village. We learned a lot from the event and look forward to trying some new things next year to build on the experience of the last two years. It has been great working with Stonewater and Orbit, we have learned much from them too.”
Pippa Reeve, Placemaking and Partnership Manager at Orbit, added: “Yet again this has proved a hugely successful event and it was lovely to see so many people from the local community come together and have a great day, while raising money for charity.”
