43 affordable homes in Amesbury to help tackle growing housing shortage
Leading social housing provider Stonewater and housebuilder Bloor Homes have completed the first homes at a much-needed new development of 43 affordable homes in Princess Way, Amesbury.
The smart new properties for low-cost rent and affordable shared ownership – the last of which will be completed in 2019 – are part of Bloor Homes’ 143-home King’s Gate development on Archer’s Way.
The new Stonewater development at Princess Way is being built to tackle the shortage of affordable housing in south Wiltshire and will provide 32 two-, three- and four-bedroom houses for affordable rent. The scheme will also offer 11 two- and three-bedroom houses for low-cost shared ownership, with prices starting at £96,000 for a 40% share. Three of the one-bedroom flats and one three-bedroom house will be wheelchair-accessible.
“We’re delighted to see these much-needed new homes in Amesbury taking shape. With average house prices in the area at £276,295* – more than ten times the average local salary – and the cost of renting over a third (36%) of the average local worker’s take home pay, housing has become completely unaffordable for many people living here,” says Phillippa Yeates, Development Manager for Stonewater. “We hope this new Stonewater development will go some way towards helping many people on housing waiting lists find a good-quality home. It also offers opportunities for first-time buyers, young families and other people trying to get a foot on the property ladder, to buy a house of their own through shared home ownership.”
The energy-efficient Stonewater homes have been designed with private back gardens equipped with storage sheds. There is also parking provision for each property.
Construction is currently under way on five two-bedroom houses, one three-bedroom house and one three-bedroom wheelchair-accessible house at the development.
Stonewater currently owns and manages 1839 properties across Wiltshire, with work currently under way on a 13-home scheme in Rowden Lane, Chippenham, which will provide nine homes for affordable rent and four two-bedroom houses for shared ownership.
Kim Willcock, Regional Sales Director at Bloor Homes Southern, says: “Our King’s Gate development is providing much-needed high-quality new homes to meet local demand both for private ownership and affordable rent, and has proved extremely popular with buyers.
“We are proud to be working in partnership with Stonewater to deliver these 43 affordable properties as part of the new phase at King’s Gate and look forward to seeing the remaining homes being completed.”
