14 September 2020: Homebuilding project at Saxon Close wins recognition
A previously underused area of a residential estate in Wiltshire, which was prone to fly-tipping, has been shortlisted for an award following the completion of a regeneration project.
Three affordable homes were added to leading housing provider Stonewater’s scheme on Saxon Close, in Westbury, by Winsley White Building Contractors & Developers Ltd and with the support of grant funding from Wiltshire Council.
The development, which was built with the intention of helping the local council to tackle housing demand in the area, is a finalist in two categories at this year’s West of England LABC Building Excellence Awards.
The brand-new three-bedroom homes, which were completed and ready for the new families to move in before Christmas, has been shortlisted for Best Small New Housing Development and Best Social or Affordable New Housing Development.
New driveways were created for the three neighbouring homes on the scheme and special care was taken with the works on this project to ensure minimal disruption was caused to the residents already living on Saxon Close.
Winners will be announced online on 15 September 2020 as the previously planned awards ceremony has been cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.
Matt Crucefix, Director of Development (West) at Stonewater, said: “We’ve partnered with Winsley White Ltd on various developments over the last 30 years, but being able to add value to the community on Saxon Close by providing affordable homes for three new families has been truly rewarding.
“Managing over 1,800 homes in Wiltshire, 37 of which are in Westbury, we’re very aware at Stonewater of the housing need for local people in the area. With the support of Wiltshire Council, we’re delighted that we’ve been able to take the opportunity to further develop the scheme, which was originally constructed in 1979.”
Sam Winsley, Director at Winsley White Building Contractors & Developers Ltd, said: “We are very proud that another one of our schemes has been nominated for this award. It’s great that small schemes such as this can be considered for these awards, it should not just be the larger developments that get the recognition as even small efforts can make a big difference in a locality.
“During construction of these homes we also passed the milestone of our company being 30 years old, originally being set up to build a scheme with Raglan (now Stonewater). This shows what a strong relationship we have which continues to receive recognition with this type of nomination.”
Richard Clewer, Cabinet Member for Housing at Wiltshire Council, said: “We are committed to building more social and affordable housing in Wiltshire as we know what a difference they can make to local families and communities. We’re proud that we’ve been shortlisted for this award and it demonstrates what a great partnership the project has proven to be.
“We’re even more proud that people are now moving into their new homes and we hope they are all very happy there.”
