Joining forces with primary school to children clean up the streets

Primary school students teamed up with Stonewater colleagues and developer Cadeby Homes to help clean up their local area. As well as improving the local environment, pupils, teachers and colleagues were talk about the importance of sustainability and community pride during the initiative.

The litter pick took place around Loughborough Road, where Stonewater is currently working to deliver a new development of 25 affordable homes, in partnership with Cadeby Homes.

Once complete, the scheme will provide a variety of affordable homes for local people, including maisonettes, bungalows and family homes. 

All properties will be for social rent and include energy saving measures such as air source heat pumps, solar panels and Wondrwall smart home technology, designed to help customers reduce energy use and minimise their household bills.

The litter pick formed part of Stonewater’s wider commitment to supporting the communities where it builds and manages homes, alongside encouraging positive environmental action at a local level.

Rachel Oliver, Development Manager at Stonewater, said: “It was fantastic to see pupils, teachers and partners come together to support the local community through this litter pick.

“At Stonewater, we work to create neighbourhoods that people feel proud to live in and activities like this are a great way of bringing local people together while making a positive difference to the area.”

Jess Scott, Assistant Head Teacher at Hathern Church of England Primary School, said: “The pupils really enjoyed getting involved in the litter pick and learning more about the importance of looking after the environment and taking pride in the local community.

“It was great for them to work alongside Stonewater and Cadeby Homes and see how small actions can make a positive difference to the area around them.”

The school is also exploring creating a group of pupil “eco warriors” following the event, helping encourage future environmental initiatives and build on pupils’ enthusiasm for keeping their local community clean and welcoming.

The Loughborough Road development is due to be completed in May 2027.
