Help reduce the risk of fires during the hot, dry weather

With the continued hot and dry weather, there is currently a very high risk of wildfires across the country. See how you can keep your home and community safe.

Date published: 17 August 2026

The Government has introduced a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues and is asking everyone to take extra care to avoid activities that could accidentally start a fire.

Dry grass and vegetation can catch fire extremely quickly and even a small flame or spark can develop into a serious fire, putting people, homes, wildlife, and emergency services at risk.

Please help keep your home and community safe

While the risk of fire remains high, please:

  • Do not use barbecues, including disposable barbecues.
  • Avoid lighting fires, firepits, bonfires, campfires, fireworks, or other open flames outdoors.
  • Never use a barbecue, firepit or other open flame on a balcony, indoors or in an enclosed space.
  • Make sure cigarettes and other smoking materials are fully extinguished and disposed of safely. Never throw them from a window or vehicle.
  • Take particular care with litter, especially glass bottles, around dry grass, woodland, and open spaces.
  • Do not put hot ashes, coals, or barbecue materials into bins. They can remain hot enough to start a fire for several hours.
  • Follow any additional restrictions introduced by your local council, fire and rescue service, landowner, or site management.
  • If you see a fire, do not attempt to tackle it yourself. Move to a safe place and call 999 immediately.

We know many people will want to enjoy the summer weather, but the exceptionally dry conditions mean we all need to take extra care to protect our homes, neighbours and communities.
