Acheson Construction Ltd is working with Stonewater to provide affordable housing for local people. The site, known as North Street Crewkerne, lay vacant and overgrown following the demolition of a former commercial building, but will now welcome 44 brand new homes.

The scheme will deliver a mixed development of semi-detached and terraced homes, ranging from one and two-bedroom flats, to two, three and four-bedroom houses, all available for individuals and families with a local connection.

The majority of homes will be available for affordable rent, with 10 allocated for Shared Ownership. This is a part-rent, part-buy scheme that makes buying a home more affordable for many aspiring homeowners.

Ahead of getting work underway, Stonewater funded and constructed a multi-use games area on the grounds of Ashlands Church of England First School, which is located next to the scheme.

In addition to this, the development will also include a new parking area for the exclusive use of families and staff at the school. Each new home will also benefit from having at least one of its own parking spaces and there are plans to include electric car charging points.

As with all of its developments, Stonewater is providing each home with plenty of surrounding green space and as the site begins to take shape there will be public artwork commissioned and included within the scheme.

Matt Crucefix, Director of Development (West) at Stonewater, said: “Stonewater is pleased to be supporting South Somerset District Council and strategically working towards meeting the housing requirements outlined in the council’s Local Plan. On average, the council needs to build 725 homes per year and so, we’re delighted to be providing much-needed affordable homes in Crewkerne.”

Councillor Val Keitch, Leader of South Somerset District Council and portfolio holder for housing, said: “In our Council Plan, we state that we will enable housing and communities to meet the existing and future needs of residents and employers. In order to do this, we aim to maximise the number of affordable homes to support rural economies and communities and this development in Crewkerne is a prime example of our commitment to ensure this happens. We welcome the progression of this development and look forward to it benefiting the local economy and community in the future. We are also pleased to see environmental benefits such as electric car charging points at each home, which is in line with our ambitions stated in our Environment Strategy.”
