30 ultra-energy efficient homes completed in Somerset

Leading affordable housing provider, Stonewater, has completed 30 ultra-energy efficient homes in Somerset that will help customers live more comfortably for less.

The homes in South Petherton have been delivered under the second phase of development and built to Passivhaus standard – a set of principles to create properties that use less energy for heating while maintaining comfort.

They feature enhanced insulation, airtight construction, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) systems and roof-mounted solar PV panels, helping reduce heat loss and lower energy consumption.

As well as contributing to Stonewater’s net-zero ambitions, the features support wider sector and government goals to combat climate change, while reducing bills for customers.

The development provides a mix of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom homes for affordable rent, helping meet local housing need in line with Stonewater commitment to sustaining rural communities.

Delivered in partnership with Somerset Council, Fisher & Dean Construction Ltd and Blue Spruce Properties Ltd, the scheme has transformed a former brownfield site into a new sustainable community.

The development also includes landscaped communal green spaces, biodiverse planting and a community garden, featuring a public art piece in the form of stepping stones. Created by artist Graeme Mitchson, the artwork takes its inspiration from the word "Flax," reflecting the site's connection to the town’s agricultural heritage and its former Flax Mill which once served as a hub for processing locally grown produce.

To mark the completion of the scheme, an official opening event was held on 20 July.

The event was attended by Stonewater's Chief Executive Jonathan Layzell and Group Director of Development Matthew Crucefix, alongside representatives from development partner SevenCapital, principal contractor Fisher and Dean, architects BoonBrown, Somerset Council, legal advisers Clarke Willmott and public artist Graeme Mitchson.

"These high-quality homes will provide local people with affordable places to live while helping reduce energy bills through Passivhaus design and renewable technology. At the same time, the development creates attractive shared spaces that encourage customers to connect with their neighbours and enjoy the outdoor environment.
