Work starts on 26 affordable new homes to help tackle local Taunton housing shortage

Construction has started on 26 much-needed affordable homes that are being built on former agricultural land off Henlade Close in Henlade near Taunton.

Stonewater, one of the UK’s leading housing providers, is working with Taunton Deane Borough Council, contractor RG Spiller and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to deliver the £2.8 million affordable housing scheme which will provide a mix of two one-bedroom, eight two-bedroom and six three-bedroom houses for affordable rent and six two-bedroom and four three-bedroom houses for shared ownership sale. The properties will each have a garden, an allocated parking space and residents will have access to a newly constructed children’s play area called ‘Leap’.

Stonewater is financing the scheme with funding support from the Homes and Communities Agency. The new energy-efficient homes have been designed with high levels of insulation to keep residents’ heating costs down and each will achieve a Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 efficiency rating.

“We are delighted to be continuing our working partnership with Taunton Deane Borough Council to help meet the local need for high quality affordable housing in the area,” said Richard Stevenson, Stonewater’s Executive Director for Development. “These new affordable houses contribute to the Council’s plans to create more than 400 affordable new homes in the Taunton and Wellington area over the next few years. We welcome this significant house-building programme that will enable local people, who support local shops, schools, services and businesses, to live in affordable housing close to their family, friends and places of work. We are looking forward to seeing the new homes take shape over the summer.”

Cllr Terry Beale, who holds the Council’s housing services portfolio, said: “I am delighted work is starting on this development. There’s a real need for affordable homes locally and by working in partnership with organisations such as Stonewater we can address this need.”
Andrew Howard, Managing Director of RG Spiller commented: “We feel privileged and are proud to be working alongside Stonewater and Taunton Deane Borough Council to be constructing much-needed affordable housing within the Taunton area. Works are progressing well and the programme is on target for completion during May 2016.”

Stonewater owns a mix of 58 houses for affordable rent and shared ownership at the new The Heathfields development in Monkton Heathfield near Taunton where the housing provider has purchased a further 14 houses which will create more affordable accommodation in the local area.
