Leading social housing provider Stonewater has celebrated the start of construction on 14 new affordable homes on land next to The Holbrook Club in North Heath Lane, Horsham.

The new homes, being built in partnership with Horsham District Council, will be part of housebuilder CALA Homes’ new 58-home development. Stonewater’s affordable scheme will be a mix of four one-bedroom apartments and four two-bedroom houses for affordable rent and six two- and three-bedroom houses for shared ownership.

Stonewater’s energy-efficient homes will be built to a high specification and equipped with energy-saving facilities including low-energy lights, water-saving eco baths and rainwater-collecting water butts.

Set to be built on surplus playing fields owned by the Holbrook Club, the development will trigger a new 25-year lease for Horsham’s premier sports and social Club, making it eligible for funding from various sporting bodies, and securing its long-term future. The scheme will also have a new access road and a pedestrian entrance off Jackdaw Lane.

“We are really excited to see work starting on these desperately-needed new affordable homes in Horsham which will help to meet a chronic shortage of truly affordable housing in the town,” says Chris Montague, Assistant Director of Development at Stonewater. “We’re also delighted that this innovative new housing scheme will help secure the long-term future of The Holbrook Club, which has been part of the town’s landscape for over 40 years.”

Stonewater’s new homes have good transport connections to Horsham town centre just over a mile away and are within a short walk of Littlehaven train station.

Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Planning and Development, Cllr Claire Vickers says: “Ensuring that there are affordable homes for our residents available in our district is important to us as a council. As part of this commitment, we are keen to continue the longstanding work with partners to deliver appropriate schemes and we were delighted to work with Stonewater and CALA Homes on this particular scheme in an area where house prices are high. We know we must continue to work with developers and housing groups to ensure a sensible number of new affordable homes are built for local people of all ages.”

Stonewater owns and manages 889 homes across West Sussex.

Nicki Dennis, sales and marketing director at CALA Homes (South Home Counties), comments: “The start of construction marks a major milestone for this new development and the delivery of much needed new homes in Horsham. In addition to the affordable properties, CALA will be bringing 44 attractive private homes to the area, in a mix of two to four bedroom styles, whilst contributing £618,000 towards improvements for the local community as part of the S106 Agreement.”
